About Pharm. D. Course
Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) is a course in Pharmacy which was approved by Govt. of India in the year 2008 with Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) being the apex governing body. This course aims development of pharmacists to play crucial role in patient care as inevitable member of healthcare team. It is a 6 years program during which 5 years is academic session and sixth year is in form of internship at the hospital.
Role of Pharm. D. in Healthcare: The students of Pharm. D. acquires competencies (knowledge, skill and attitude) in the domain of pharmaceutical care services, drug and poison information services, patient counselling, drug-drug interactions, monitoring of adverse drug reactions, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, help in drug dosage adjustment (especially in geriatric/renal/hepatic failure patients), as assistant or coordinator of clinical trials, promote rational use of medicines etc. Currently, there seems a huge demand of a Pharm D course in our country. Some of the key areas in which Pharm. D. students can have lucrative career are as follows:
Pharmacovigilance and Drug Safety (as Pharmacovigilance officers in clinical industry)
Clinical Trials (as Clinical Research Associates (CRA) or Clinical Research Coordinators (CRC) and Data Managers in clinical trial set up)
Medical writing (as professionals, who writes about information on healthcare and medical profession for industry professionals and general audiences).
Academic Pharmacy (as a faculty member in pharmacy colleges) involved in teaching, research, public service, and patient care.
Hospitals and Healthcare Centres (as Drug Information Pharmacistor Clinical Pharmacist) providing pharmaceutical care.
Community and Consultant Pharmacists (providing information and advice on health, providing medications and associated services, and by referring patients to other sources of help) Pharm. D. graduates have opportunities to be entrepreneurs by starting their own community pharmacy.
